It is difficult to gauge the true prevalence of males experiencing eating disorders, as no statistic presented can take into account the undiagnosed cases that may be present.

Eating Disorders Victoria accepts the estimate that one in ten young adults and approximately 25% of children diagnosed with anorexia nervosa are male. In 2007, Harvard University Medical School released the results of a mental healthy survey of 9000 adults in the United States which suggests up to 25% of adults with eating disorders are male.

Other quoted statistics for individual eating disorders are as follows, please note these are approximate figures:

  • 50% of people with Binge Eating Disorder are male
  • 20% of people with Anorexia Nervosa are male
  • 8-11% of people with Bulimia Nervosa are male
