Perfectionism

Perfectionists always strive to meet the highest standard of performance possible, regardless of how unrealistic these standards may be.

Perfectionism is a common personality trait in many people who develop an eating disorder. The diagram below demonstrates the relationship between perfectionism and the self-perpetuating cycle which exists between other key risk factors in the development of eating disorders, such as self esteem, body image and dieting.

 It is important for people with a tendency towards perfectionism to be aware of the relationship between perfectionism and eating disorders.

Early intervention is key, so if a person with perfectionist tendencies becomes aware of the development of disordered eating behaviours, such as rigidity or guilt surrounding eating patterns, it is important to seek help immediately.
