How To Become A Volunteer

Helpline Support Workers (HSW)

Helpline Support Workers participate in the direct provision of the Information, Support and Referral Service by responding to a variety of telephone, email, face-to-face and message board enquiries. The helpline is located at the EDV premises in Glen Iris. The Helpline operates from Monday to Friday between 9.30am & 5.00pm. A commitment of a weekly 4 hour shift for a minimum period of 12 months is required (shift times are 9.15am to 1pm or 1pm to 5pm).

Volunteers participate in a minimum 3 day in-house training course, followed by 3 observations and supervised calls. A 3 month probationary period applies. Ongoing training, support and debriefing are provided. Reliable and committed volunteers are desired. If you have had a personal experience with an eating disorder you must be recovered in order to volunteer.

Training intakes occur throughout the year with positions available on an ads needs basis.

Upcoming training: July/August 2012.

Support Group Convenors (SGC)

Groups are held after hours on various nights of the week & at different locations. Group locations include: Glen Iris, East Melbourne, Ringwood, Geelong, Ballarat, Portland & Albury/Wodonga.

Separate groups are available for people with an eating disorder (known as Recovery Groups) and Families and Friends. Combined groups are also available where people can bring someone along if they wish. They are a mixed group.

Volunteers participate in a 4 day in-house training course, followed by an observation period. Ongoing training, support, supervision and debriefing is provided. Reliable and committed volunteers with group facilitation experience are desired. Places are limited. Location preferences are limited. If you have had a personal experience with an eating disorder you must be recovered in order to volunteer.

Training intakes occur on an ads needs basis.

Upcoming training: TBC.

Recovery Chatroom Moderators (RCM)

Recovery Chat room moderators facilitate the online support groups for people with an eating disorder. The Chat room is a great environment to engage in group processes, provide support and participate in delivering a message of hope and recovery. Chat sessions are held on Tuesday, Thursday & Sunday evenings from 7pm to 9pm. Volunteers work on a rotating roster system and facilitate groups once a week or once a fortnight. Volunteers participate in a 3-4 day in-house training program followed by observations and supervised sessions. Ongoing support and debriefing is provided. Post training & observations all sessions will be moderated by volunteers from home. If you have had a personal experience with an eating disorder you must be recovered in order to volunteer.

Training intakes occur on an ads needs basis.

Upcoming training: July 2012.

Carer Chatroom Moderators (CM)

The Carer chat room is currently closed. It is expected that it will re-open sometime in 2012. We aim for it to be held on a Wednesday evening from 8pm to 9.30pm. Please feel free to send your expression of interest in volunteering on the Carer chat room.

Speakers Bank (SB) - Sharing Your Story

As the peak body for eating disorders in Victoria, we receive a variety of requests from the media and community groups to access people who have suffered from an eating disorder or supported a loved one with an eating disorder.

Requests come from: radio, television, print media and community groups. The purpose of the Speakers Bank is to have a database of speakers available to utilise in a variety of situations.

By sharing your story you can promote recovery, instil hope in others and break down the myths associated with eating disorders. Training and ongoing support is provided.

If you have recovered from an eating disorder, or have been a family member, partner & friend of someone with an eating disorder, and would like to share your story and promote the message of recovery, then the Speakers Bank is for you. Volunteers participate in in-house training and receive ongoing support and debriefing. If you have had a personal experience with an eating disorder you must be recovered in order to volunteer. Recruitment is done on an ongoing basis.

Training intakes occur on an ads needs basis.

Visiting Professionals (VP)

The role of the Visiting Professional is to provide an additional resource for the Support Groups. Visiting Professionals are qualified health professionals with experience & extensive knowledge in treating people with eating disorders. They provide additional advice and information, in response to attendees’ questions and concerns, as a means of assisting the attendees to make informed and constructive decisions. If you are a health professional with experience in eating disorders then this position may be for you.
