Eating Disorders Victoria acknowledges that the needs of a person with an eating disorder and those of their family members, friends and partners are as individual as the people themselves.

EDV has support officers and support groups for both the person suffering from the eating disorder and their family, friends and partners.

  • Is someone you care about having difficulty with food?
  • Are you unsure of what to do and say?
  • Do you sometimes feel like you are walking on eggshells?

Our Family Support Officer Service is available to family, friends or partners of a person experiencing an eating disorder to provide an opportunity for you to express your feelings, gather suggestions and discuss coping strategies and services available to help you best perform your role in supporting your loved one.

To arrange a face-to-face or telephone appointment with a Family Support Officer, please contact The Eating Disorders Helpline on 1300 550 236 or 03 9885 0318, or email help@eatingdisorders.org.au.  Appointments are free & confidential.

Feedback from clients of our Family Support Officer:

"I walked in feeling devastated; I left feeling like there was hope, care and love in the world. Thank you so much!"

"I now feel a sense of empowerment.  I feel that in a small way I can play an active role in encouraging my daughter to acknowledge her eating disorder, just by changing the way i speak with her."

Family and Friends Support Groups

The Family and Friends Support Group is for family members, partners and friends of people with an eating disorder.  The Family and Friends support group is a place where family members and friends (not people with an eating disorder) may share their experiences and learn from each other, express their emotions in a confidential and supportive environment, learn coping strategies and discover they are not alone.

People experiencing an eating disorder have their own separate support group.

Building Hope skills-based learning program

Support groups provide an opportunity for information sharing, increased understanding and peer support. They allow people to discuss and share their lived experience and emotions and develop new strategies in a sage and supportive environment. It is not therapy but rather an opportunity to receive and provide support to others in a similar situation. They provide empathy, understanding and hope for those whose lives are affected by an eating disorder.
